Democrats for Life of Minnesota advocates respect for life, from the beginning of life to natural death. This includes, but is not limited to, opposition to abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia. A good society is not achieved when each person seeks only his/her self-interest, but is born of a commitment to the common good.
We affirm that it is a fundamental purpose of government to protect the weak from social and economic injustice and to guarantee genuine equality of opportunity for all in their pursuit of happiness. Pro-life Democrats are committed to these principles. By working together, Democrats will bring the focus back to what is truly important – strong families and equal opportunity for all.
We will work to promote the best of the Democratic tradition.
FOR— Defending a women’s right to choose to carry her child to term.
FOR— Maintaining the DFL tradition of defending those least able to defend themselves: the child, the poor, those living on the margins of society.
FOR— Promoting legislation that reflects a consistent life ethic in which all life is valued.
FOR— Eliminating the use of capital punishment in the United States.
FOR— Supporting enactment of the 95/10 initiative so as to reduce abortions by 95% in the next ten years.
The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.
— Hubert H. Humphrey
"I agree with the late Cardinal Bernadin that our faith calls us to promote a consistent ethic of life. This ethic defends and protects human rights from conception to natural death and, as such, is a complex and demanding tradition.
"As Cardinal Bernadin stated, this Catholic tradition 'joins the humanity of the unborn infant and the humanity of the hungry; it calls for positive legal action to prevent the killing of the unborn or the aged and positive societal action to provide shelter for the homeless and education for the illiterate.'
"These issues are related and we should approach them as related moral questions in our pastoral and public responses. Those opposed to abortion must not be indifferent to those suffering from poverty, violence and injustice. The Catholic moral vision has as its unifying principle the promotion of full human development and the protection of human life."
